I’ve noticed a problem with Lightning view panel in Thunderbird. After each restart of Thunderbird it disappears and I must resize it using vertical line on the right.
User Skip Head has solved this problem:

hover your mouse pointer over the line, in the middle of line where the tiny
dots are – your pointer will turn into a hand. Click on the dots and
the today pane will jump out to regular size. Now it will stay the
correct size.

1. Be sure you have following options checked in your Ubuntu kernel:
File systems -> Miscellaneous filesystems -> UFS file system support (read only) (UFS_FS)
File systems -> Partition Types -> PC BIOS (MSDOS partition tables) support (MSDOS_PARTITION) -> BSD disklabel (FreeBSD partition tables) support (BSD_DISKLABEL)
Default kernel for Ubuntu has already this options.

2. After rebooting type in console:

dmesg | grep bsd

You shoud receive similar output:

[ 2.108529] sda4: <bsd: sda8 sda9>

It means that you have Freebsd installed on sda4 partition, and sda8 and sda9 are so-called “slices”

3. Use command similar to:

mount -t ufs -r -o ufstype=ufs2 /dev/sda8 /media/free

For older versions of Freebsd:

mount -t ufs -r -o ufstype=44bsd /dev/sda8 /media/free

or

mount -t ufs -r -o ufstype=ufs /dev/sda8 /media/free

Here is my script for auto-purging of removed packages (the script deletes remaining configuration files of package) in Ubuntu:

#!/bin/sh
for i in `dpkg -l | grep ^rc | cut -f 3 -d ' '`
do
    dpkg -P $i;
done

dpkg -l shows list of packages installed in system
grep ^rc print all lines starting with “rc” (in this case print all lines with name of packages which configuration files are still in system)
cut -f 3 -d ‘ ‘ Divides lines into fields using space as delimiter and prints 3rd field (in this case retrieve name of packages to delete)
dpkg -P package purges package
This link explains other things.
Script can also be added to /etc/crontab as:

09 18 * * * root for i in `dpkg -l | grep ^rc | cut -f 3 -d ' '`; do dpkg -P $i; done

Script will be executed with root privileges everyday at 18:09.

There is a known problem in Ubuntu connected with high frequency of load/unload cycles on hard disk.
Here are useful links:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DanielHahler/Bug59695
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3675960&postcount=26
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=5031046&postcount=3

I used approach from Ubuntu forums and Load_Cycle_Count stopped increasing. Unfortunately, everytime when I woke up my Asus F3F from suspend to RAM (even it was on AC power), Load_Cycle_Count started dramatically increasing.
Here is a solution:

#!/bin/bash
if on_ac_power; then
  hdparm -B 255 /dev/sda
else
  hdparm -B 128 /dev/sda
fi

I saved this code as /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99-fixhdd.sh and made it executalbe:

chmod +x /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d/99-fixhdd.sh

Since this fix, everything is OK.

You can easily check temperature of your hard drive:
Type in command line:

sudo apt-get install hddtemp

When application Hddtemp is installed, you can use it typing:

sudo hddtemp /dev/sda

where /dev/sda is your hard drive.
It will output something like this:

/dev/sda: ST9120822AS: 40°C

You can also have a graphical applet on your panel which indicates temperature of HD. Type:

sudo apt-get install computertemp

Then:

Add “Computer Temperature Monitor” to your Gnome panel

Click right on applet icon and choose Preferences

In Display tab select HDDTEMP in “Select Sensor to monitor” and your drive in “Select Thermal Zone”.

Preferences window

There is another approach:
Install smartmontools package:

sudo apt-get install smartmontools

enable SMART monitoring (/dev/sda is a hard drive):

sudo smartctl -s on /dev/sda

and execute this command:

sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda | grep Temp

it will output something like:
